So before you use the street, you gotta check, check.” So go the lyrics of “Respect (Check),” The song is great fun, but it’s not to be taken lightly. More than 1,000 children under 17 were involved in traffic collisions around the city last year alone, and nine of them died, according to the Transportation Department. The video of the song will now be used as part of the Cross This Way curriculum — a new educational initiative, jointly offered by the city’s Transportation and Education Departments, that will be taught to students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades. It’s an educational arm of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s The Cross This Way curriculum, aimed at 300,000 schoolchildren, will be announced today at P.S. 124 in Gowanus, near where a 10-wheel truck We got a sneak preview on Tuesday. “Feel the love, feel the energy, feel the music,” Lee Eastmond, an educator from the Department of Transportation, told a classroom of fifth graders at P.S. 261 in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, on Tuesday. As Kim Wiley-Schwartz of the Transportation Department told us, with an appropriate metaphor: “It’s a two-way street.” Here’s what else is happening: Looks like we’re in for a dazzling morning, but an iffy evening. Your morning commute looks divine, with sunny skies and a cool breeze. Temperatures could reach a This afternoon, though, dark clouds could roll in, bringing strong gusts and possibly even thunderstorms. Still, we say risk it and leave the umbrella at home — there’s only a small chance of rain. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • These streets • • • • • • Come together, New York. (That’s a gentle request from Yoko Ono Lennon.) The It is scheduled to arrive at City Hall on Thursday and to make stops in Jackson Heights, at the Museum of the Moving Image, at the Bronx Academy of Letters High School — where the student body will form a giant human peace sign — and other locations in the coming weeks. “This project is at the root of John’s wishes for people everywhere to embrace their creativity and musical expression,” Ms. Lennon said in a news release. “He would be so proud, and I am too!” New York Today is a weekday roundup that stays live from 6 a.m. till late morning.
