I had registered for a physics class and learned at the first session that a $35 fee was required. My family could not pay that amount. I asked an administrator if the fee could be waived so that I could take the course. His response was no. He recommended that I switch to the evening school and look for a job. Going to school three or four nights a week for six or seven years (and looking for a job) did not appeal to that 16-year-old. So I dropped the physics and took a course that did not come with a fee. Fees can affect quite a few students. S. M. MILLER New York The writer is professor emeritus of sociology at Boston University.
