A look back at a few legends of the catwalk, and what made their stride so special. === In times like the 1980s, when fashion itself was brash and theatrical, designers were unafraid of models who brought their outsized personalities to the catwalk. People like Vivienne Westwood or Gianni Versace encouraged the beauties they hired — exceptional types like Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Carla Bruni — to translate on the catwalk not only their professional chops but their love of the moment, the camera’s lens, the rapt attention of the claques they attracted and even, occasionally, the clothes. That indisputably Golden Age of the Catwalk was soon enough supplanted by some fairly prolonged dark days, a period when designers preferred their models to disappear into the clothes and walk with all the personality of cyborgs. Whatever the style of the day, the truth is that runway walking is an acquired skill — or it is unless you happen to have been born with the animal grace and athleticism of someone like Gisele Bündchen. Happily, the period we find ourselves in is one in which lively runway walks are resurgent.
