If Mr. Trump lost other people’s money, why does he get the tax benefits, one reader wonders. === To the Editor: Re “ If Donald Trump uses “other people’s money,” is highly leveraged in his real estate deals and puts in only modest amounts of his own money, how does It suggests that there is far more wrong with that part of the tax code than anyone cares to admit. BILL BARRETT Torrey, Utah To the Editor: For the sake of argument, let’s concede that Donald Trump should not be criticized for taking advantage of every legal tax provision, even if that resulted in his paying little or no personal income taxes. And let’s also concede that some of any tax he would have paid would not be well spent by the government, as he asserts. But that only underscores the need for him to fully disclose his personal charitable contributions. Surely he must agree that a person of his wealth should contribute something to our common good and that there are some charities out there that will spend his money wisely. DONALD K. STERN Chestnut Hill, Mass. To the Editor: Jack Mitnick, a tax lawyer, prepared Donald Trump’s tax returns, not Mr. Trump. If anyone displayed brilliant business acumen in enabling Mr. Trump to dodge taxes, it was Mr. Mitnick. All that Mr. Trump did was sign the forms and reap the rewards. That hardly makes him, in Rudolph W. Giuliani’s words, a “genius.” ELIZABETH GALEWSKI Madison, Wis.
