Unlike when London burned in 1666, this was only an art project. A 400-foot, scale replica of the city’s older skyline was incinerated on the Thames River as part of The 1666 fire broke out in a bakery, and, over the course of several days, destroyed large swaths of the city center, consuming 13,000 buildings but resulting in surprisingly few deaths. “London 1666,” the artwork that was set ablaze, was built of wood and designed by the American artist David Best, who is known for making London’s Burning was organized by The recreation of the devastating blaze was preceded by several other works as part of the festival: “Fire Garden,” a display by the Carabosse Company outside the Tate Modern; “Dominoes,” a long trail of giant dominoes that snaked through the City of London leading to a large structure in the Barbican Center’s courtyard that caught fire and collapsed; and “Fires of London,” a large-scale projection of licking flames by the artist Martin Firrell beamed onto the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral.
