By the time the leaves start turning and the temperatures drop, grocery stores are already brimming with just about anything and everything pumpkin. And each year, the offerings seem to become more inventive. We’re all used to pumpkin pie and pumpkin bread, but have you ever tried pumpkin chips? Or pumpkin chili? Those last two are on the shelves at Westside Market this month. “Everyone’s shocked,” said Ian Joskowitz, chief operating officer of Westside Market. “When you say pumpkin chili, they’re surprised, until they taste it, and then they like it.” Mr. Joskowitz said the pumpkin beers — and pumpkin-beer-battered zucchini — are among customers’ favorites. “It seems to be building, year after year,” Mr. Joskowitz said of the pumpkin craze. At Trader Joe’s stores, customers can choose from 70 pumpkin foods this year. Some new products include pumpkin vinaigrette, pumpkin spice babka, pumpkin soup crackers and pumpkin spice caramel corn. Whole Foods has pumpkin pie ice cream sandwiches, pumpkin spice yogurt, pumpkin chocolate truffles and pumpkin pie soda. “We’ve seen sort of an explosion of that in our stores,” said Michael Sinatra, a regional spokesman for Whole Foods Market. “It’s a sign of the season.” Michelle Domena, 38, strolled through the pumpkin baked-goods section of the Whole Foods store by Union Square on Tuesday evening. “They start to turn up everywhere,” she said. For her, the pumpkin-filled shelves are a bittersweet sign. “It’s time to move on from summer, basically,” she said. Here’s what else is happening: The day can’t seem to make up its mind.
