Swansea currently sits 17th in the Premier League table, having won just one of its opening seven games. Defeat to Liverpool on Saturday convinced Steve Kaplan and Jason Levien, the club’s American owners, to relieve the 61-year-old Guidolin of his duties. He had been given the position on a permanent basis only in May. Together with Huw Jenkins, the Swansea chairman, Kaplan and Levien had interviewed a number of candidates in recent weeks in case they decided to replace Guidolin. Ryan Giggs, the former Manchester United player; the Bayern Munich assistant manager Paul Clement, and Marcelino Garcia Toral, coach of Spanish side Villarreal until this summer, were all considered. Sources at Swansea cited Bradley’s in-depth knowledge, his experience and his leadership qualities as the decisive factors that persuaded them to appoint him. After leaving the United States national team in 2011, he spent two years as coach of Egypt, before helping Norway’s Stabaek qualify for the Europa League. He joined Le Havre in France’s second division in 2015, narrowly missing out on promotion last season. Bradley, 58, has been considered for a number of jobs in England previously – he was a contender for the manager’s post at Hull City during the summer – and has made no secret of his desire to work in the Premier League. Swansea has now given him that chance: he will take his first training session on Wednesday, and his first game will come away at Arsenal on Oct. 15.
