MetaKI is a forward-looking research project that explores how Artificial Intelligence can bring avatars in the Metaverse to life. The vision is to create virtual characters that don’t just talk but also react with facial expressions, gestures, and subtle nuances—making communication in digital worlds more human, natural, and engaging. Our focus is on three big questions: How can state-of-the-art AI technologies like large language models and real-time speech systems be connected to today’s Metaverse platforms? What role do speed and scalability play—and how can cloud and device-based AI work together seamlessly? And finally: How can AI understand human communication so well that avatars can reflect emotions and moods in real time? With MetaKI, we are pioneering new ways to merge AI, multimodal interaction, and immersive environments. The results will help create richer and more meaningful social experiences in virtual worlds, while exploring ethical and technical challenges along the way. The project is led by the LAVIS research group, bringing together expertise in AI, virtual environments, and human-computer interaction to shape the future of communication in the Metaverse.
